It Takes a Village Preschool
DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practice): Research has shown that young children respond better and learn more if they are allowed to explore and play with things and people in their environment. These toys or games (sometimes we call them "manipulatives") need to be things that will interest your child as an individual at his/her age level and need also be challenging and versatile enough to hold his/her interest as well as peak curiosity.
According to Sue Bredekamp, director of professional development for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, DAP has two dimensions. First, it is age appropriate--it reflects what we know about how children develop and learn. Second, it is appropriate to the individual child--it takes into account each child's own development, learning styles interests and cultural background. Teachers consider both dimensions when planning the learning environment.
