Beacon Hill Nursery School was founded in 1955. Our primary mission: to nurture our students' innate curiosity and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Teachers, children, and parents all play important roles in the educational process.

Nursery-aged children cycle through developmental stages at differing speeds. Because BHNS attempts to place children in the morning preschool and kindergarten classes by age and social and cognitive readiness, teachers are able to present material in a way that most precisely meets the specific interests and abilities of each child.

A consistent 5-day routine provides a comfortable structure for our children. The carefully planned sequence balances independent activity with small and large group times, and quiet choices with active ones. Children take responsibility for choosing many of their specific daily activities; this teaches self-reliance and accommodates individual preferences and learning styles.

We are a non-profit school. Tuition goes directly the operating budget to support salaries, facilities, curriculum, program expenses and tuition assistance.

Location
Located in the heart of Boston, Beacon Hill Nursery School leases a large space at Hill House, a 19th century brick building, which has recently undergone extensive renovations.

Classroms
Because children best master and integrate information through first-hand experience, play using real materials has a major role at BHNS. Each classroom has a book area, a science area, a computer, a water/sand table, a dramatic play area, art supplies, large and small blocks, and a variety of manipulative materials and games.

Library
Our library is central to fostering a love of reading and writing, housing over 3,500 books, tapes and videos for children. Each class enjoys a weekly library time; library books are also used for daily storytimes, and to furnish the Book Area in each classroom.

Play Areas
We have two custom-designed, on site playgrounds, where children play daily, honing gross motor skills, exercising both body and imagination. We also have daily access to a gym for creative movement and dramatic play, special events, and where children can run and play in inclement weather.
